Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Chefchaouen painted blue?
The origin of the blue color has several theories. The most widespread attributes it to Sephardic Jews who took refuge here after their expulsion from Spain in 1492: blue represented the sky and God's presence (tekhelet in Hebrew). Another explanation: blue repels mosquitoes. The tradition has continued and is now maintained by residents as a strong identity marker.
How to get to Chefchaouen from Tangier?
The most practical route from Tangier is by car (2.5h via A4 motorway then RN2). By CTM or Supratours bus from Tangier bus station: 2.5-3h, from 50 MAD. Shared grand taxi from Tangier: around 80 MAD/person. No direct train — nearest station is Ouezzane (50 km). A rental car allows free exploration of the surroundings.
Can you hike around Chefchaouen?
Yes, Chefchaouen is an ideal base for several hikes. The most popular is the Jbel Tissouka trail (1,981m, 5h round trip, intermediate level) with a bird's-eye view of the blue city. Ras El Ma waterfall is 15 min walk from the medina. Akchour Falls (easy, 1h one way) are 30 km away. Local guides available from 300 MAD/half day.
